Adopting a Rescue Cat from Cyprus to the UK: Everything You Need to Know

Adopting a Rescue Cat from Cyprus to the UK: Everything You Need to Know

Every year, hundreds of rescue cats and dogs travel from Cyprus to new homes in the United Kingdom. The demand is real — the UK has a strong adopt-don't-shop culture and more people wanting rescue animals than the local supply can meet. Cyprus has thousands of healthy, loving animals in rescue who need homes.

But the process of getting a rescue animal from Cyprus to the UK is not simple. Post-Brexit rules, veterinary requirements, transport logistics, and documentation timelines mean the process typically takes six to twelve weeks from approval to arrival.

This guide covers everything: the requirements, the timeline, the costs, and what to expect at every step.

Step 1: Find your animal

Browse rescue animals available for international adoption at tinies.app/adopt. You can filter by species, age, sex, and destination country. Every listing includes photos, temperament description, medical status, and the rescue organisation caring for the animal.

When you find an animal you connect with, click "Adopt This Tiny" to begin the application process.

Step 2: Submit your application

The adoption application asks about your living situation (house or flat, own or rent, garden access), other pets, children's ages, experience with animals, and why you want to adopt. You can also provide a veterinary reference.

The application is reviewed by the rescue organisation caring for the animal. They may message you through the platform to ask follow-up questions. This is normal — rescue organisations want to ensure a good match for the animal.

Typical response time: three to seven days.

Step 3: Get approved

If the rescue organisation approves your application, Tinies initiates the logistics pipeline. You will see a tracking dashboard showing every step of the process from this point forward.

Step 4: Veterinary preparation (2-4 weeks)

The rescue organisation schedules and completes the following veterinary work:

Vaccinations. Dogs receive DHPP (distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, parvovirus). Cats receive FVRCP (feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, panleukopenia). These are standard core vaccinations.

Rabies vaccination. Required for UK entry. Must be administered after or on the same day as microchipping.

Microchip. An ISO 11784/11785 compliant microchip is implanted. The microchip number is recorded on all subsequent documents. The microchip must be implanted before or on the same day as the rabies vaccination — this is a strict requirement.

Spay or neuter. If not already done, the animal is sterilised before travel.

Rabies titer test. This is the critical step for UK-bound animals. A blood sample is drawn at least thirty days after the rabies vaccination and sent to an EU-approved laboratory. The test confirms that the animal has developed sufficient antibodies against rabies (see UK government guidance on rabies blood tests for pet travel). Results typically take two to three weeks. This is the longest single step in the process and the main reason UK adoptions take longer than EU adoptions.

Tapeworm treatment (dogs only). Dogs must receive tapeworm treatment (praziquantel) twenty-four to one hundred and twenty hours before arrival in the UK. This is administered by a veterinarian and recorded in the pet passport.

Step 5: EU pet passport

Once the veterinary preparation is complete, an authorised veterinarian in Cyprus issues an EU pet passport. This document contains the animal's microchip number, vaccination records, rabies titer test results, and owner details. It is the animal's travel document for the rest of its life.

Step 6: Transport booking (1-2 weeks)

Transport from Cyprus to the UK is typically arranged through a professional pet courier service. These are licensed companies that specialise in animal transport and handle all customs and import requirements.

Common transport methods include commercial pet courier (door-to-door service, most common and most reliable) and cargo flight through approved pet transport companies.

Volunteer flight escorts (a person travelling to the UK who agrees to accompany the animal in the cabin or as checked luggage) are cheaper but less reliable in terms of scheduling.

Tinies maintains a database of approved transport providers and handles the booking on your behalf.

Step 7: Pre-departure veterinary check

Within ten days of travel, a veterinarian must issue a health certificate confirming the animal is fit to travel. All documents are reviewed by the Tinies team to ensure everything is in order before the animal departs.

Step 8: Travel day

The animal travels from Cyprus to the UK. You receive departure confirmation and an estimated arrival time. For door-to-door courier services, the courier will contact you directly to arrange the delivery time and address.

Step 9: Welcome home

Your new family member arrives. Tinies sends a confirmation and a welcome guide with advice for the first days and weeks.

Step 10: Follow-up check-ins

Tinies sends check-in emails at one week, one month, and three months after arrival. We ask for a photo and a brief update on how your animal is settling in. These check-ins help us ensure the adoption is going well and feed our Tinies Who Made It gallery — the collection of happy adoption stories that inspires future adopters.

Timeline summary

StepDuration
Application and approval1-2 weeks
Vaccinations and microchip1-2 weeks
Rabies titer test (blood draw + lab)3-4 weeks
EU pet passport1-2 days
Transport booking1-2 weeks
Pre-departure vet check1 day
Travel1-3 days
Total typical timeline6-10 weeks

The rabies titer test is the bottleneck. For EU destinations (Germany, Netherlands, Sweden), the titer test is not required — EU-to-EU movement only needs a rabies vaccination at least twenty-one days before travel. This is why EU adoptions are typically faster than UK adoptions.

Costs

Tinies charges a transparent, all-inclusive adoption fee that covers three components:

Veterinary preparation: EUR 150-250, depending on the animal's starting medical status. This covers vaccinations, microchip, rabies vaccination, titer test, spay/neuter, and health certificate.

Transport: EUR 200-400, depending on the transport method and specific route. Door-to-door commercial courier is at the higher end. Cargo is mid-range. Volunteer escorts (when available) are the lowest cost.

Coordination fee: EUR 80-150. This is the Tinies fee that covers logistics coordination, document tracking, and post-adoption support. Tinies does not mark up veterinary or transport costs — those are passed through at cost.

Total typical cost for a UK adoption: EUR 450-750.

The rescue organisation may also have a local adoption fee (typically EUR 50-100) that goes directly to the rescue to cover the cost of care while the animal was in their facility.

What you need to prepare

Before your animal arrives, make sure you have:

  • A quiet space for the animal to decompress (a room they can retreat to)
  • Food and water bowls
  • Litter tray (for cats)
  • A bed or blanket
  • Basic supplies: lead, collar, ID tag with your UK address and phone number
  • Register with a local vet (ideally before arrival, so you can schedule a check-up for the first week)
  • Pet insurance (recommended — most UK policies accept rescue animals)

Frequently asked questions

Can I adopt a dog from Cyprus to the UK? Yes. The process is identical to cat adoption. Dogs require the additional tapeworm treatment step twenty-four to one hundred and twenty hours before arrival.

Do I need to travel to Cyprus? No. The entire process is coordinated remotely. Your animal is delivered to your door by a professional courier.

What if the adoption does not work out? Contact Tinies and the rescue organisation. Rescue organisations take returns seriously and will work with you to find a solution — whether that is behavioural support, a trial period adjustment, or in rare cases, rehoming.

Is the adoption fee tax-deductible? The veterinary and transport components are not tax-deductible. If you make a separate donation to a registered charity through Tinies Giving, that donation may be tax-deductible depending on your jurisdiction. Consult your tax advisor.
