PetBacker vs Tinies: Which Pet Care Platform Is Better for Cyprus?

If you are looking for pet care in Cyprus — or looking to offer pet care services — you have probably come across PetBacker. It is a Singapore-based marketplace that has been active in Cyprus for several years, with listings across boarding, sitting, walking, and daycare.

Tinies is different. It is a Cyprus-based platform built specifically for this market, with a mission to fund animal rescue through every booking. We built it because we wanted pet owners in Limassol, Nicosia, Larnaca, and Paphos to have the same quality of service you would find on Rover in the US or the UK — but with every transaction supporting the island's rescue organisations.

This is an honest comparison. We will tell you what PetBacker does well, where Tinies is different, and why we think the model matters.

PetBacker has been operating longer and in more countries. That is the advantage of a decade-long head start. Tinies is newer, focused entirely on Cyprus, and every provider is identity-verified before they can appear in search.

Commission: where the platforms diverge

This is the single biggest difference and the one that affects providers most directly.

PetBacker's fee structure:

  • Providers pay 15% to 25% commission depending on how many bookings they have completed
  • New providers start at 25%
  • The rate decreases slowly: 20% after 6 bookings, 19% after 150, down to 15% only after 3,001 bookings
  • Exclusivity penalty: if PetBacker detects that a provider also works on another platform, the commission increases to 40%
  • Pet training carries a fixed 35% commission regardless of experience

Tinies' fee structure:

  • Pet owners pay a 12% service fee at checkout
  • Providers receive 100% of their listed price from booking one
  • No tiered rates — 12% on your first booking or your thousandth
  • No exclusivity requirement — list on Tinies, PetBacker, Bazaraki, wherever you want
  • No penalty for being on multiple platforms, ever

We wrote a separate piece on why exclusivity penalties hurt providers and the market. The short version: penalising people for leaving is not a sign of a platform worth staying on.

Real numbers from the Cyprus market

We analysed PetBacker's public Cyprus listings. The median overnight boarding rate in Cyprus is approximately EUR 25/night. Here is what that means for a provider on each platform:

PetBacker (new)PetBacker (established)Tinies
Boarding rateEUR 25/nightEUR 25/nightEUR 25/night
Commission25% = EUR 6.2515% = EUR 3.750% (owner pays 12%)
Provider keepsEUR 18.75EUR 21.25EUR 25.00
Over 100 bookingsEUR 1,875EUR 2,125EUR 2,500

A new provider on PetBacker earns EUR 625 less over their first 100 bookings compared to Tinies. Even an established provider with 3,000+ completed bookings still earns EUR 375 less.

And if you are on both platforms? PetBacker could raise your rate to 40%. That same EUR 25 booking drops to EUR 15 in your pocket. On Tinies, you still keep the full EUR 25 — we do not monitor what you do elsewhere.

For a detailed breakdown of what pet care services cost across Cyprus — by city and service type — see our complete 2026 price guide.

Where the money goes

On PetBacker, the commission funds the company's operations in Singapore.

On Tinies, 90% of the 12% service fee goes directly to animal rescue organisations in Cyprus. That is not a pledge or a campaign — it is the structural reason the platform exists. The amount donated, the organisations funded, and the per-charity breakdown are all publicly visible on the Tinies Giving dashboard, updated in real time.

Cyprus has more than 1.5 million stray cats and the government spends almost nothing on their care. The rescue organisations doing the actual work — trapping, sterilising, feeding, fostering, rehoming — run almost entirely on personal donations and volunteer labour. Every booking on Tinies generates a contribution to that work. Every dog walk, every cat drop-in, every overnight stay.

We wrote a full explanation of how the 90% model works and how a single booking fee funds a sanctuary if you want the detail.

Features: side by side

Search and discovery

Both platforms let you search by location and service type. PetBacker has a larger pool of listings in Cyprus due to its longer presence in the market. Tinies offers more specific filtering — cancellation policy, minimum rating, holiday availability — and every result is a provider who has been verified by ID. On Tinies, you can search by city and service type directly: dog walking in Limassol, pet sitting in Nicosia, boarding in Paphos, or pet sitting in Larnaca.

Provider profiles

PetBacker profiles include photos, bio, rates, and reviews. Tinies profiles include those plus GPS walk tracking data, certification badges from completed safety training, a giving impact statistic showing how much the provider's bookings have contributed to rescue organisations, and a structured availability calendar.

Booking and payment

Both platforms process payments securely through their systems. The structural difference is who pays the fee: on PetBacker, the provider pays (reducing their earnings). On Tinies, the owner pays a 12% service fee at checkout, and the provider receives their full listed rate.

On Tinies, payment is authorised when you book but only captured when the provider accepts. If they do not respond within 4 hours, your hold is released automatically and you are notified. You are never locked into an unconfirmed booking.

Trust and safety

PetBacker offers basic profile review. Tinies requires three things before a provider goes live:

  1. Government ID verification — real identity confirmed, not a pseudonym
  2. Manual review by the operations team
  3. Safety training completion — a structured course covering animal handling, emergency procedures, and client communication

This approach is modelled on what Rover does in the US and UK with their background check and safety quiz system, adapted for the Cyprus context.

Communication during bookings

Both platforms offer in-app messaging. Tinies adds:

  • GPS walk tracking — owners can watch their dog's walk route in real time on a map
  • Tinies Card — a post-service activity report with photos, food/water/walk logs, and a personal note from the provider (similar to Rover's Rover Card)
  • Meet-and-greet schedulingrequest an in-person or video meeting before committing to a booking

Adoption

PetBacker does not offer animal adoption.

Tinies operates a full international adoption platform connecting rescue animals in Cyprus with adopters across Europe — including the UK, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, Austria, and Switzerland. The platform coordinates the entire logistics pipeline: veterinary preparation, EU pet passport, rabies titer testing, transport, and post-adoption check-ins.

If you are interested in adoption, we have written extensively about the process: how international adoption works from Cyprus to the UK, the complete 2026 adoption guide, and the real costs and timelines nobody tells you about.

Customer support

PetBacker's support is global, based in Singapore. Cyprus is UTC+2 (UTC+3 in summer); Singapore is UTC+8. That is a 6-hour timezone gap, which means responses to evening queries in Cyprus often arrive the following morning.

Tinies is based in Cyprus. Support is local, in the same timezone, and understands that "my sitter hasn't shown up and it's a holiday weekend" is a crisis that cannot wait 12 hours.

What PetBacker does well

We are making a comparison, not a takedown. PetBacker has genuine strengths:

  • Established presence — more listings available in Cyprus right now
  • Grooming and training categories — services Tinies does not yet offer
  • Proven track record — years of completed bookings
  • International footprint — useful if you travel frequently and want one account across countries

If you need access to a larger pool of providers today, or need a grooming or training service, PetBacker is a reasonable option.

What Tinies does differently

Tinies is built on a fundamentally different premise. It is not a transaction platform that happens to involve pets. It is a mission-driven marketplace where every booking funds the rescue and care of animals in Cyprus.

For providers: you keep more of what you earn from day one, you are never penalised for working on multiple platforms, and you get professional tools — GPS tracking, certification, the Tinies Card — that help you build a reputation and a repeat client base. If you want to know what earning potential looks like, we have a full breakdown in how to earn EUR 500–2,000/month as a pet sitter in Cyprus.

For owners: you get verified, reviewed providers with transparent cancellation policies, secure payment that only charges when your booking is confirmed, and the knowledge that your booking directly supports animal rescue through Tinies Giving. If you are new to finding care, our guide on how to find a trusted pet sitter in Cyprus walks through what to look for.

For Cyprus: you get a platform that reinvests in the island instead of extracting from it. One that addresses the stray animal crisis structurally, through every transaction, rather than treating it as someone else's problem.

The bottom line

If the only thing you care about is the largest number of available providers today, PetBacker has the edge of a decade-long head start.

If you care about what your money supports — lower commissions for providers, stronger verification for owners, and 90% of platform revenue going to animal rescue — Tinies was built for exactly that.

We are not trying to be the biggest pet care platform in the world. We are trying to be the best one for Cyprus, and we are not trying to get rich doing it. We are trying to take care of animals.
